Picking up poop is probably the only thing not to love about our furry friends.
You can almost guarantee that shortly after setting out on your daily walk, they’ll take a dump right where you don’t want it … on the footpath, a neighbour’s lawn, or
community park.
While you want to do the right thing and pick it up, you’re then stuck carrying around a smelly bag of poop until you can find a rubbish bin, which isn’t always easy.
I looked for a solution and found lots of great bag dispensers, but these only solved half the problem.
Once you’ve picked up the poop, where do you put the stinky bag when you want to continue walking but can’t find a bin? Some people choose to dump the bag, which is arguably worse for the environment than leaving the poop behind.
With three dogs to walk each day, it was a gross problem impacting my walking experience. Why couldn’t there be something to take care of the whole job – not just part of it – and ideally that I didn’t have to carry?
Something lightweight, burst-proof, airtight, self-contained, and hands-free - an all-in-one-container that could attach seamlessly to my dog’s lead, just like a cocoon!
And so I imagined the Pupoon!
With some fierce determination and much-appreciated help from Simon, Blake, Matt and the guys from Formswell - Dan, Jack and Rene - support from the Canberra Innovation Network, and… countless poop, smell and road tests with Westie Angus, and Schnauzers Baxter and Milo, the idea slowly came to life.
It’s been such an interesting journey - hasn’t it kids!?* - that somehow transformed ‘foul’ into ‘fun’ and delivered a fabulous solution to a pukey problem.
The Pupoon has changed our dog-walking experiences for the better. Hopefully it can change yours too (…and keep the neighbours happy!).
Rachel 😀
Dedicated to my wonderful mum, Helen (1939-2022) - who truly appreciated the joy and companionship of dogs; and to my amazing grandpa - Charles O’Connor (1905 - 2007) - whose daily walks around the suburbs in Melbourne, and kindness towards dogs, inspired generations of dog lovers within the family.
And to Cobber, Daisy, Millie, Monte, Angus, Baxter and Milo… who all played a special part in encouraging me to even think about poop containers!
