OMG! Dog poop blows the budget on the Gold Coast
It seems that dog poo may be taking some of the shine off Queensland’s Glitter Strip, with the State’s second-largest city in a tailspin over how to better manage the spiralling costs of dog waste disposal, according to a new report published on ABC Online.
The report, titled, ‘Gold Coast faces extraordinary problem with plastic-wrapped dog poo’, revealed that the Gold Coast City Council spent a whopping $739,000 on plastic dog waste bags and servicing dog waste bag dispensers last financial year, when the city is home to only 69,000 registered dogs.
This included handing out a staggering 13 million plastic dog waste bags - that contributed 23 tonnes of plastic waste to the city’s landfill - and servicing about 280 dog waste bag dispensers.
Despite all that ratepayers money, it seems the dog poo problem is still not solved, with the council now proposing a review of its dog waste bag policy to find out how so many bags were used.
Ah…has anyone thought about switching up to a Pupoon on the Gold Coast?
Adopting a ‘manage your own dog waste’ philosophy is not only more cost effective and hygienic for the community as a whole, it would help to free up ratepayers money for essential services, which could really help people in a cost of living crisis.
